What is the Supreme Committee under the UAE AML law?

The Supreme Committee is a high-level oversight body created by the new UAE AML law. Its full name is the Supreme Committee for the Supervision of the National Strategy for Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism and Proliferation Financing, and it is affiliated with the Presidential Court. Its formation and rules of procedure are set by a Cabinet resolution.

The Committee sits above the existing National Committee. Its role is strategic: it studies, monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the strategies and measures adopted by the National Committee and issues recommendations and decisions on them. It also sets requirements for the National Committee and concerned authorities, coordinates the support they receive, oversees the country’s mutual evaluation process, and can propose draft laws and amendments for submission to the Cabinet.

For compliance professionals, the creation of this body signals a more centralised and accountable national governance structure for AML, CFT and counter-proliferation financing. It reflects the UAE’s intention to keep its framework aligned with international standards and to drive consistent implementation across federal and local authorities.
